Programs
1) “Faces with Feelings!”
Kids ask Layne this a
lot. Well, there are all sorts of faces. And they show many
feelings. Emotions are what make faces, people,
characters, books . . .
interesting. But how do you draw them? This visit, one
of his most requested, empowers kids . . . letting
them know that they can draw expressions in a simple and fun
way. Great for Kindergarten to 5th grade.
This is a very
interactive presentation. Layne talks about the basics of the
face. He then draws – using fun props and input from the kids.
What does macaroni have to do with drawing? You'll
find out! You'll then see a few slides of his artwork as he
discusses how emotions
appear on faces. Then finally, everyone draws!
The
kids love it and learn a little about drawing faces. They can
use this in the future when they become artists! This visit is
“hands on” for the kids. Children produce something they
can take home and be proud of!
2) “How did you make that book?”
This is another of one of the
most often asked questions. In this presentation, Layne walks
through the
step-by-step
process with real examples – from manuscript, thumbnails,
sketches, color art – till the finished picture book is
complete!

3) “Picture Books 101”
This multimedia program is aimed at
young authors and illustrators. Layne gives a lively
presentation that shows what basic elements are crucial to make
picture books great. He shows you the things to do, and
things not to do. (This is an excellent program for classes
writing picture books themselves!)

|
4) “Read and Draw”

This program is aimed at
kindergarten and pre-k's. Layne will read from his picture
books, then he will draw on a large pad . . . a kitten, a horse,
who knows?! It's lot's of fun and the kids get to interact with
the artist as he draws. Alternative: after reading, kids can
draw along with Layne.

How much time?
Depending upon grade and type of presentation, from
thirty to sixty minutes. Multi-day visits are welcomed!
Audience size?
The size of the audience depends upon your needs and
your school. I usually present to an entire grade level at a
time, or up to two combined grade levels. My preference is for
groups of around 150 or less. Of course, smaller groups are
better and allow for more interaction, which is very valuable
and makes my visit more personal and meaningful. Groups of up to
200 can be accommodated. In-services and Family Evening sessions
can accommodate any number.
For the drawing program, a cafeteria with tables works
well,
as long as the room can be darkened. Libraries are fine for
smaller groups.
Book Sales?
Book sales can be handled in one of two ways:
-
The school can choose to handle all aspects of
the book ordering and sales and use the proceeds as
a fundraiser for the school. Ordering books is not a
difficult task, though it does take thoughtful
planning. As part of your School Visit Kit, I'll
happily provide you with a Book Order Form and
publisher contact information.
Or...
To make the Book Sale as easy as possible
for everyone involved, Layne can handle book sales
for you in the following manner:
Pre-Orders: In your School Visit
Kit you will receive book order forms that have the
cover of each available title, a brief summary, and
a place for inscriptions. Order forms should be
distributed 2-3 weeks prior to the visit. Schools
collect all returned order forms and mail (Priority
Mail) directly to Layne one week before the visit.
All books will be personalized, signed, grouped by
teacher, and delivered on the day of the visit.
Day-Of Orders: Any orders that come
in after the pre-order is mailed, will be filled on
the day of the visit, while supplies last.
After-Visit Orders: It never fails,
once students and teachers see Layne's
presentations, some realize they forgot to order
books! No problem, most schools have a post-visit
book sale for one week after the visit. All order
forms are sent together and Layne will personalize,
autograph, group by teacher and ship, freight-free,
to the school.
